Passenger numbers taking off at whitsunday airport

A record number of passengers are making their way to Belfast's whitsunday airport, in a sign of rising demand.

The number of passengers entering airport Terminal 5 by sea was the highest ever, up 42 per cent on the same period last year.

Some 6,800 fewer than in 2012 have arrived at the whitsunday terminal during February, with this year's peak reaching 4,724.

Meanwhile, demand for seats at Belfast City Airport has been lower compared to last year with the number of passengers arriving the airport increased, to 692,845 last year, and another 718,845 during January.

The rise reflects an average daily increase of 0.7 per cent at the airport compared with the same period last year, with this being boosted by more people travelling during the weekend.

At the whitsunday terminal alone a total of 6,400 passengers were taken there on Saturday, compared to 6,200 on January 9.

Paying fares

There were 728 fewer departures in January than the same period of the previous year - but overall demand at the airport has remained very subdued.

However, passengers heading out to explore Northern Ireland, are still willing to pay a large sum to get to the city.

An average £60 average is charged to return to the UK to reach the mainland and £70 for an emergency exit.

Airport director Pat Fennelly said: "The whitsunday terminal has been consistently showing an increase in numbers of arrivals and departures, even on weekends.

"However, on nights when demand is high and availability is not, more than half-a-million people will try to get to the airport each night, and the figures are still going up."

Mr Fennelly added: "By reducing peak times, people can be sent out for the weekend without a peak time on the train, when the number of cancellations is so high."

Passengers on holiday are more likely to be flying out at midday on Friday and Saturdays than at lunch, and many have decided to get an early morning flight.

They travel through airports, then board ferries into Europe, before spending the night in hotels.

Passengers have to choose a service for the journey from the UK to another EU country and take their choice of a train from London to Ireland.
